BIRGIT COMPTON'S
POSH CLOTHES & PONYTAILS
SILK NIGHTWEAR - Page One
It's no big secret that here at Birgit Compton we are big fans of
silk nightwear. Whether it's pyjamas or nightdresses, there's just
no substitute for sleeping in the highest quality silk nightwear,
preferably between crisp freshly laundered linen sheets of the
sort used in the bedrooms of the poshest hotels.
Birgit herself is a devote of silk pyjamas and has an enviable collection which
seems to grow larger with each Christmas or Valentine's Day. We think
Carolyn looks best in a long silk nightdress and negligee, she would rather wear
a short nightdress which we suspect is so that she can sleep with her hands
between her thighs, but since when she stays with us she pretty much has to do
what we want her to, she usually finds herself in long one instead. To curb that
naughty nocturnal habit of hers we're also seriously considering tying her wrists
together behind her back at night, to keep her wandering fingers out of mischief.
Birgit's current favourite silk pyjamas - from the "Entice" range by De Pledge.
As for favourite suppliers of silk nightwear,
the famous Janet Reger used to be our
source of choice, but in recent years they seem
to have taken their eye off the ball and gone
distinctly down market, supplying a cheaper,
lower quality product to the department store
Debenhams rather than concentrating on the
top-end of the market, and so the range
offered at their, (admittedly still rather
enchanting), boutique in Beauchamp Place, in
London's fashionable Chelsea, is not what it
once was. We can only sit and flick through
our collection of late 80s Janet Reger
brochures and dream of what once was and
pine for lost opportunities sadly missed. The
Janet Reger Hayworth nightdress and
negligee remains for us the all time classic and
sadly one we never had the chance to wear.
Of current favourite suppliers, it is a three horse race
amongst who we most frequently honour with our
patronage. First up is Jane Woolrich, a designer from
Norfolk with a flair for theatrically 30s inspired
nightdress and negligee ensembles. These creations
definitely seem to be motivated by the quintessence of
the night attire of inter-war period glamorous sirens of
Hollywood. Not cheap, as you might expect at this end
of the market, each garment is hand made to the specific
measurements you supply and can be produced in any
shade of your choice from a mind boggling swatch of
hues. We opted for the unimaginatively named style 7371
& 7381 nightdress and negligee combination in peachy
pink coloured satin silk. The nightdress has an original
open back with cross lacing detail, while the matching
negligee has edge to edge lace trim from collar to hem.
