BIRGIT COMPTON'S
ALICE IN WONDERLAND - Page Four
Since our last musings on the subject of Alice in
Wonderland and in particular the 1972 musical version
starring Fiona Fullerton, a new DVD version has
appeared, which although by no means perfect does go
someway to improving the muddy colours of the original
transfer. Also a free version was even given away with
the (London) Sunday Express recently. All this has
only served to get us more hot under the collar, to which
end we are now commissioning a dress maker to make us
as exact a copy of the Alice dress so fetchingly sported
by Fiona as is physically possible, the results hopefully
to appear here in due course.
A painstaking trawl through the film has produced, we
hope, sufficient information for this copy to be
produced.
Alice's dress
Only at the beginning of the film and at the very end do we get a look at Alice's dress without the white pinafore being
worn over the top. The general look of the outfit is obviously very much inspired by the 1951 Disney animated version
which has been the standard for Alice's attire in all the film versions to follow. The pale blue dress is comparatively plain
and the most significant difference between this and the Disney version is that it fastens up the front with matching blue
buttons, we think nine, to be precise.
We only really get one brief full length shot of Alice's dress minus pinafore as she runs from the rowing boat to the site
of the picnic, but this does reveal one continuity error in that in this scene her legs appear to be bare while in the rest of
the film she wears plain white stockings, (not the blue and white hooped versions of the Disney film and others). The
dress has a plain white 'Peter Pan' collar, short puffed sleeves, finished in white lace, (possibly broderie Anglaise), the
fitted waist is gathered together and the hem of the slightly below knee length dress is finished with three overlap things
which I'm afraid we don't know the technical name for. If we find out we'll let you know.
By the time we see Alice sitting down at the picnic she is already wearing the white pinafore with pink trimmings and two
front pockets, and so she does for the rest of the film until the closing sequence. It takes quite a number of different shots
to capture the full details of the pinafore due to Fiona's lovely brown hair obscuring details of it. Starting at the top the
sleeves are capped and trimmed with the same peachy pink ribbon that is common throughout the pinafore.
The capped sleeves of the apron are quite distinctive, but the pink trim ends where the bodice of the apron begins and
the front is plain white. How the capped sleeves end at the back is quite difficult to see as this is virtually always hidden
by Fiona's hair.
